Hospice of Homer is a non-profit community outreach volunteer program. Volunteers are the Heart and Feet of Hospice. Without volunteers HOH could not provide the services that we do. For each volunteer position, the applicant receives orientation, training and ongoing education. Below is a list of volunteer opportunities:

End Of Life Volunteer

Direct Care Volunteers provide non-medical practical assistance to clients, and their families, at the client’s residence (including assisted living residences, long term care or the hospital). Direct care volunteers offer (to list a few things) friendly visits, respite for the primary caregiver, transportation, home maintenance, food preparation, house cleaning, and emotional support. Volunteers commit to two – four hours per week for one year. These volunteers are trained and given support and supervision by HOH staff. HOH presents a 33 hour end of life volunteer training usually in October.

Volunteer Visitors and Phone Friends

Volunteer Visitors and Phone Friends provide friendly visits to elders in the community who are less mobile and in need of companionship. These volunteers visit, read out loud, assist with food preparation and offer emotional support. Volunteers commit to two to four hours per week for one year. These volunteers are trained and given support and supervision by HOH staff. HOH presents a 33 hour volunteer visitors and phone friends training usually in October.

Office Support Volunteers

Office Support Volunteers perform a variety of tasks at the HOH office. Volunteers help with mailings and other administrative tasks as well as assist with the medical equipment loan program. Computer experience is preferred. Training takes place as needed. Hour commitment varies.

Movers and Shakers Volunteers

Movers and Shakers Volunteers help transport, assemble and set up the medical equipment that HOH loans to community members. They also help with general home maintenance and upkeep. Training takes place as needed. Hour commitment varies.

Chefs of the Heart

Chefs of the Heart cook delicious and healthy food for clients and their families. Usually the food is purchased and prepared by the volunteer and taken to the person’s home. Hour commitment varies.

Green Thumb Brigade

The Green Thumb Brigade helps maintain the Hospice of Homer Memorial Garden located at the WFKL Park. This involves cleaning the garden in the spring, weeding and watering during the season and in the fall preparing the garden for the winter. Hour commitment varies.

Fundraising Volunteers

Fundraising Volunteers help with fundraising events by selling raffle tickets, delivering candy, staffing booths, decorating for an event, etc. Hour commitment varies.

Hospice of Homer Board of Directors

The Hospice of Homer Board of Directors acts as the governing body of the organization. Board meetings take place once per month usually for one hour. Board members are involved in a variety of committees and activities.

You may be able to double or triple your already generous donation to Hospice of Homer! Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. Some companies also match gifts made by retirees and/or their spouses. If your company has a matching gift program, request a matching gift form from your Human Resources Department and send it completed and signed with your gift or shortly after you have made your gift. We will do the rest.

Leave a legacy that will improve end-of-life care for people in need for many years to come. Your legacy gifts ensure the continuation and expansion of Hospice of Homer. Please contact your attorney for information and update laws.

You may include Hospice of Homer when preparing your will, or ask your estate planner to add a codicil to an existing will designating Hospice of Homer when preparing your will, or ask your estate planner to add a codicil to an existing will designating Hospice of Homer as a charitable beneficiary. You may choose to leave any combination of:

  • A specific dollar amount.
  • A specific percentage, or all, of your residuary estate – the remainder left after bequests to others, debts and expenses are paid.
  • A gift in trust that pays a portion of the trust property to individual beneficiaries and a portion to Hospice of Homer.

You may designate Hospice of Homer as the beneficiary of the insurance policy. You will be entitled to an income tax charitable deduction in the year of your gift.

The principal advantage of donating retirement plan assets to Hospice of Homer is that you avoid all income and estate taxes. If you leave these assets to a non-spousal individual beneficiary, they are subject to extremely high estate tax and income taxes. You may instruct the institution that handles your retirement accounts to designate Hospice of Homer as the beneficiary of your IRA or pension plan..

Transfer assets to a trustee and each year you and/or someone you have designated will receive income from the trust. The trust may last either for a term of years or for life. The trust allows you to receive an income tax deduction now, arrange for tax-free growth of retirement assets, and receive a retirement income from the trust when you retire. When the trust ends, the remaining trust assets will pass to Hospice of Homer.

Donating in stocks to Hospice of Homer can give you significant income tax savings.
